The company was originally called Chongqing Hongda Auto Fittings Research Center and was founded by Yin Mingshan in 1992. Initially, she specialized in motorcycle repair. The company was renamed Lifan Industry Group in 1997. By the end of the 1990s, the company was producing 2 million motorcycles a year.
In 2003, the Chongqing Automobile Plant was bought, where in 2005 the company began producing cars, mainly copies of popular foreign models. The first vehicles produced were the LF6361/1010 minivan and pickup truck based on the 1999 Daihatsu Atrai. In December 2005, the Lifan 520/520i was put into production with a Brazilian Tritec engine. In 2017, Yin Minshan stepped down as chairman of the board of directors, although he retained control of the company.
In 2020, the company's sales fell by 95% compared to the previous year, and in August it filed for bankruptcy and began restructuring. The company was saved from liquidation by another Chinese automaker, Geely, which converted Lifan to the production of electric vehicles.
